I'm Starting To Get It Now!

I have been reading David Warlick's and Will Richardson's blogs for the past week and really getting inspired! But just today David Warlick asked an important question...what do blogs replace? I agreed with the other readers that responded...nothing really. Blogs just add something new, not only to education but also to how we see the world and how we interact with it. Ten years ago I would only know someone like David Warlick if I were lucky enough to work in a district that hired him to come in a talk, but today I know of him because of the blogs I read...they lead me to him and I'm really glad they did!

So how am I going to use this information to help me become a better teacher? Well, I think I have to remember that these important tools that we are using and modeling for our students must be used for a reason, they don't have to replace anything, but they do have to have a purpose, they need to solve a problem we have in our lives or they need to help us understand the world around us in a meaningful way.

The first problem I am going to try and solve in my classroom is how to fill-in students who are absent for an important lecture or demonstration...Podcast! I'll let you know how it goes once school gets started!

Pam,
I too am a new blogger. I found your blog from your post on Will Richardson's blog. I have got to say for me, the real power of blogging is with my own professional development. I have learned so much from blogging. I have go read, analyze, synthesize and then write to be a blogger.

I have to say that I have done some things to increase traffic on my blog. The first thing I did was go to sitemeter.com and register, download and add the widget to me blog. It's free. That way I know how many and where people are from who visit my blog. I have also registered for my blog at technorati.com. You have to get a free account at technorati. Also, I take the time to give a thoughtful response to new bloggers' blogs. So, I invite you to comment on my blog I would love to know what you think about topics on my blog.

Hi Pam,

Another new blogger checking in here. I'm an English teacher and tech enthusiast, and have been trying to sort out many of the same issues you mention in your post. That always seems to be the trick - there are so many cool toys, tricks, and apps, but what are the best practical applications?

I try to hash through some of that on my blog, so please drop by and join in the conversation whenever you can!

(I'm also going to try podcasts on a regular basis this year, after I dipped my toe in the pool last year, to some success - I think that the key to success there, much like with blogging, will be regularity!)
