Wiki Update

Well, my kids really got into using the wiki. Since my assignment was really basic...recreate the school's web site using a wiki...I found that my students still just wanted to make a static website but in the form of a wiki. But truly, I think that is just because of the way I shaped the assignment. So I will give them another assignment with a wiki that will guide them in a more collaborative direction. Hopefully giving them some basic experience with a wiki will allow them to go further with the next assignment. I have not framed the assignment yet, so I'll let you know when I get to that.

If anyone has any ideas let me know.

Here is the link to the wiki. Notice that students used Animoto to add some videos to the site. I feel like it was a bit much, but the kids had a lot of fun creating them, so I went with it.

So, I guess it wasn't totally successful, but in the end I'm glad I started showing the students how to use a wiki and have them talk about wikis and how they can be used. I had them post their thoughts on a class blog too...check it out.

Hi Pam,

That's great that your kids are moving forward with wikis. I don't know what level your kids are operating at, but this wiki was the first one I ever had kids create, and with minimal guidance from me (I was learning at the same time they were), they did a fine job that gets hits from Google every day. This was a one-off project that took about 2-3 weeks:

My current sophomores are working on a wiki over the course of the entire semester. They'll be adding research, literary analysis, and creative projects to it through January. You can stop by and check it out here:

You don't seem to think it was successful, but I'm curious - how are you gauging success? Did the kids take ownership of the project? That can be half the battle right there sometimes.

I agree that I was probably a little hard on the kids. In retrospect they really did a nice job. They totally took ownership of the project and started to understand why a wiki can be a good thing. In fact, two days after the project was completed one of my students asked for my help setting up a wiki that she was created for a group project in another class. I'd call that a little success!
